Hydraulic controls on injection of carbon dioxide into deep saline aquifers
نویسنده
چکیده
Sequestration of carbon dioxide in geologic formations, both deep aquifers and depleted petroleum reservoirs, has the potential to signi...cantly reduce the atmospheric emissions of that greenhouse gas. Injection into a deep saline formation di¤ers from injection into a hydrocarbon reservoir in that there is no produced ‡uid from the aquifer and the hydrogeologic characterization of both the receptor formation and the cap or seal is much more uncertain. Hydraulic control may reduce the risks and increase the safety of CO2 sequestration. While the applicability to a particular site is strongly dependent on the local conditions, the injection of brine above the con...ning layer can reduce the vertical migration and enhance the lateral spreading of the carbon dioxide.

How pressure buildup and CO[subscript 2] migration can both constrain storage capacity in deep saline aquifers
A promising way to mitigate global warming is to sequester CO2 in deep saline aquifers. In order to determine which aquifers are the best for sequestration, it is helpful to estimate how much CO2 they can store. Currently, this is difficult because both the pressure buildup from injection and the volume of available pore space have been identified as constraints, but have not been compared to d...
متن کاملConvective stability analysis of the long-term storage of carbon dioxide in deep saline aquifers
Deep saline aquifers are one of the most suitable geologic formations for carbon sequestration. The linear and global stability analysis of the time-dependent density-driven convection in deep saline aquifers is presented for long-term storage of carbon dioxide (CO2). The convective mixing that can greatly accelerate the CO2 dissolution into saline aquifers arises because the density of brine i...
متن کاملCoupled Hydromechanical Modeling of Co2 Sequestration in Deep Saline Aquifers
Sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in deep saline aquifers has emerged as an option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere. The large amounts of supercritical CO2 that need to be injected into deep saline aquifers may cause large fluid pressure increases. The resulting overpressure may promote reactivation of sealed fractures or the creation of new ones in the caprock seal. ...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of CO2 injection into deep saline aquifers
In the last two centuries, atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) have augmented by about 35% as a result of increased anthropogenic emissions. To reduce these emissions, geologic Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) has been advanced as an emerging technology. Current estimations report that 60% are of the total storage capacity under the subsurface is included in deep saline for...
متن کاملScaling Behavior of Convective Mixing, with Application to Geological Storage of CO2
CO2 storage in deep saline aquifers is considered a possible option for mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources. Understanding of the underlying mechanisms, such as convective mixing, that affect the long-term fate of the injected CO2 in deep saline aquifers, is of prime importance. We present scaling analysis of the convective mixing of CO2 in saline aquifers based on...
